This was a small southern town where everyone talked about each other. They would all learn every flagitious detail of what George did to her and what he made her do to him. She would become the ruinous subject of malicious gossip.

What would her husband think of her if he ever learned of all the disgusting things she did with this black man and how much she came on his big penis?
What George was doing to her was awful, but the embarrassment of other’s knowing would be far worse.

Fear and shame led Alison to inaction and her further spiral downward.
